It is no mystery, our co-workers are probably the people we see more than anyone else. We would love to say that we see our significant others the most, but sadly we don’t–unless the two of you work together. Life is miserable if you are surrounded by people you don’t like. Instead of just isolating yourself amongst the sea of co-workers, the office just may be more productive if you invest in the co-workers around you.
We like people that like us. The more people like us, the more successful we can become. Having our own support system within the office, just like we do at home, can really say a lot about who you are and where you just may go in your career. In fact, this alone can create a lot of positive energy in your office altogether.
Here is how you can become the most well-liked in the office –
Remember their names.
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but take a moment to think about how many names you know around the office. You don’t need to remember everything about a person but remembering their name goes a long way. Saying someone’s name or greeting them by their names shows a lot of respect. People love to hear their name. Remember it and use it–often.
As about their lives.
People love to talk about themselves. Instead of just saying hello as you walk by or idle talk around the water cooler, actually stop and take a moment to really ask some constructive questions. Ask appropriate questions about them and make it a point to remember what they had to say. This is great for next time when you can ask a follow-up question. People really do appreciate and like a person that remembers things about them from previous conversations. Doing this is a very likable trait.
If you say you’re going to do it then do it.
No one like a person that never follows through. If you say you are going to do something, then do it. It is understood that from time to time things just don’t align, but don’t get in the habit of always being the yes (wo)man or over-committing yourself.
Invite them to your group fitness class.
(Come on were you really that shocked by this one?) Since we are all about leading healthy lives around here, invite a co-worker to one of your workouts. Not only does working out together make yourselves accountable but you can really share a special bond with someone you sweat with. Heck, just getting a co-worker to workout can improve their happiness around the office as well when they start feeling a lot better about themselves after a great workout. Group fitness can even reduce stress.
Think about the most likable person in the office. Pay attention to gestures and mannerisms they possess. It is even the subtle little things that make them the most likely person. Start using some of their tricks as well.
