If you’re participating in Dry January, a pledge to not drink any alcohol for the first month of the year, we salute you. It’s difficult to decide to forgo alcohol and make the decision to indulge in wellness, but we are here to support you. We all need a way to unwind, so here are a few ways to unwind that doesn’t involve alcohol. Plus, great tips for a dry January.
4 Ways to Unwind During Dry January
Hang out with a friend.
But make sure that friend isn’t going to pressure you to drink. Better yet, it would be great if that friend won’t be drinking either. Taking the time to hang out with friends cheers you up. Plus, it releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and oxytocin. Oxytocin calms the stress response, and studies have shown that it curbs the urge to stress drink too. Call up that (no alcohol) BFF and get hangin’!
Get working out! Jump on a bike ride, go for a run, check out a local HIIT class, or have a solo living room dance party. When you move your body, and the endorphins start flowing, it can alleviate the stress that drives us to drink. Even jumping in bed and having sex can be a great way to wind down at the end of the night.
Tackle a project.
Do you have some projects you have been meaning to tackle? Household projects you’ve long neglected can help distract you from the urge to drink. Yes, the hardest part would actually be starting the project, but the joy you will get once the project is done outweighs the initial burden. If you don’t have any projects, then maybe dive into a hobby you used to enjoy or try a new one.
