Winter can be a huge drag for those that love to run outside. It is easy for those cold temperatures and nasty weather to turn into an excuse to ditch your dedication to running. You donโt have to let it, though. Treadmills do exist. Yes, running in one place can certainly be more boring than your cityscape, country roads, or your familiar neighborhood, but it’s time to not make the “dreadmill” an excuse and hit that conveyor belt. Here are some ways to make treadmill runs less miserable.
4 Ways to Make Treadmill Runs Less Miserable
Run with Others
Running in one place might be the most isolating way to work out. But working out with others can be a huge motivator. Fitness tracker app, Strava reported that group activities completed 78% more active time than those who only ran solo. This is where running with others can really make running in place more interesting (or should we say less miserable). Even if youโre running from home, modern treadmills like Peloton Tread Ultimate and NordicTrack Commercial 2450 come loaded with tons of content to make it feel like youโre not running alone.
Change it Up
Youโre much less likely to get bored when you keep switching up the tempo. Instead of running at the same speed at the same incline, just staring at the monitor thinking that the 3-mile mark is 10 hours away, switch it up. A lot of treadmills already have programs built in that will change the speed and include for you, but if you have to manually do it, try this: For ten minutes, run each minute at a different speed or incline. For the first five minutes, increase the incline every minute, then for the next five minutes, increase your speed every minute. Then work your way back down. Boom, you already ran for 20 minutes.
Plan Out Your Playlist
When you find yourself barely on the treadmill, don’t also just barely turn some music on. The last thing you want to do is feel even less motivated. Take some time to plan out your playlist before you go for your run. Keep the music upbeat and at a higher tempo. Of course, love the songs too. Pick songs that you will be singing out loud at home or screaming them in your head at the gym. It’s your time to literally play all of your favorite songs, don’t let the time go to waste.
Have Fun!
Skip, hop, run sideways, run with high knees, run backward, swing your arms back and forth or do all of the above. It is your run, so have fun with it. Who cares what other people around you think. There are plenty of people still feeling the wrath of the “dreadmill” and wishing they had the motivation you have.
