Caffeine is caffeine no matter where it comes from right? It gives us the energy boost we need and that is all we really care about. Well, we believe that natural caffeine is actually better for you than artificial caffeine and here is why.
Let’s first start by defining the differences between a natural caffeine source and an artificial one.
Natural Caffeine v. Artificial Caffeine
In reality, natural and artificial (aka synthetic) caffeine are nearly indistinguishable from a chemical standpoint.
The major difference between the two is that artificial caffeine is produced from urea and chloroacetic acid rather than extracted from plant sources like natural caffeine comes from. Additionally, there are around 60 known types of plants that contain naturally occurring caffeine.
The FDA does actually regulate added caffeine in five categories of products: foods, beverages, energy drinks, dietary supplements, and over-the-counter drugs. Which is very important to identify for the consumer. However, there is a lot of misinformation about the caffeine when it comes to the differences with if the product contains artificial or natural caffeine within the product.
How the Body Absorbs Artificial Caffeine v. Natural Caffeine
Synthetic caffeine absorbs quicker into the body than natural caffeine, giving you that quick energy you crave. The downside is, synthetic caffeine leads to a much quicker crash. Alternatively, a naturally sourced caffeine may not absorb as quick (but still quick enough) and will provide your body with a longer, sustained energy.
Benefits of Natural Caffeine
The most common sources of natural caffeine are coffee beans and tea leaves. While there aren’t any benefits to artificial caffeine, except for that energy buzz, there are plenty of health benefits from natural caffeine sources, like that of the tea plant. There are powerful antioxidants in the tea plant that are known to prevent cancer, prevent heart disease, and even Alzheimer’s disease.
