How many of you have opened Instagram, only planning to check it for about 30 seconds, yet next thing you know you have been scrolling through Instagram for 30 minutes and you are looking at someone’s post you don’t even follow? ::Raises hand:: Yup, we have been there too. Also, how many of you have seen a cool new exercise from your favorite influencer on Instagram only to find yourself later that week trying out that exercise for yourself? Oh, yeahโus too!
It is hard to not get inspired by people (Influencer) on Instagram, it is also hard to not feel like these influencers are also better than you, specifically when you attempt to try the exercise they did only to find yourself flopping around all over the place. People feel like this every day, yet many of them don’t stop to think twice about the negative impact it could be having on them mentally.
The reality is, these people and their ‘crazy’ new exercise aren’t going to go away any time soon. Plus, even if you know how effective basics are, youโre still going to constantly see new things online that you want to try. Thatโs literally the pressure these influencers feel on a daily basisโto do something new, exciting, and different. Whatโs most important is to be able to not fall under the same pressure and try all of their latest and greatest tips. Instead, determine what exercises are reasonable for you to try, and then make sure you plan to progress to them safely and effectively.
More likely than not, the person you say doing the new and exciting move has already put in the groundwork, even though they are not showing that part in any of their posts on Instagram. Or maybe they have, but that might require scrolling back a year or more to find that one post. Chances are these exercises they are doing require a specific balance, certain muscle engagement, flexibility, mobility and strength which are certainly not things that can be learned overnight. They could have years of practice before attempting the one move you want to try tomorrow.
So if you do decide that one of the exercises from your favorite influencer is one you’d like to try, the first step is to take a look at your current workout routine. Your workout routine could very well be ready to handle that new exercise now, but it could also be not quite there yet. If your workouts currently already incorporate a lot of the basic movement patterns that are in the new exercise, then you most likely can handle trying out the new exercise. If your workout routine isn’t currently doing any of the basic movements in the exercise, then think about adding those into your workout and mastering them first before trying the new exercise.
Now let’s grab some POW and get working on mastering the basics.
