You’ve heard it before and you are going to hear it again–sitting has been claimed as the new smoking. Many of us work in front of computers for eight hours a day and then enjoy leisure time when we get home in front of the television for a little Netflix relaxation. With the weather becoming more tolerable there are even more things you can do to keep your body moving while working a desk job.
Studies are showing that we are increasing our sitting more and more, year after year. This is primarily due to a lot of us having jobs that rely a lot on technology which means a lot of us are sitting in front of a computer all day. To offset our sitting, Apple, amongst many other companies, have created things like notifications telling us to stand every hour. Plus, we have all already heard time and time again to go for a walk, take the stairs, but sometimes we can’t just leave a take a break.
Here are 3 ways to keep work productivity up while decreasing your sitting hours as well.
Make a Meeting a Walking One
More times than not, we are meeting clients or other co-workers just a couple doors down from our office to just sit down again. If you can, make a meeting with a co-worker and tell them you guys are going to walk outside while you chat about what needs to be discussed. Even better, if there is a coffee shop nearby, walk to the coffee shop, grab a cup of joe and then walk around while you chat and sip.
Answer Emails Standing
Doing research or spending a lot of time reading may be best while sitting but typing doesn’t require a whole lot of relaxation. Next time you time block yourself time to respond to emails, respond to them while standing. It is easy to do and you will be distracted responding to emails to not even realize you have been standing the whole time.
Say Yes to a Standing Desk
If your company is willing to shell out the big bucks for a standing desk then say yes. We suggest getting one of those that can move easily from standing to sitting. Doing small increments like 30 minutes standing and 30 minutes sitting will help pass the time away and be better for your health. Other benefits included in standing more are better posture and improve circulation.
