If you are a regular on your blog, then by now you probably understand the importance of fueling up before an intense workout or really any type of workout for that matter. A big misconception when it comes to a food that you should consume pre-workout are carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are great before a workout, as they are a great source of energy. However, not all carbohydrates are treated equally. A carbohydrate you should avoid before a workout is a sugar, specifically simple sugars. A lot of people think it is great to take before a workout because it gives you a burst of the energy. This is true but simple sugars also come with a quick crash. Simple sugars aka simple carbohydrates have a negative effect on the body by causing your blood sugar to drop. Especially when taken alone this can lead to fatigue, dizziness, energy crashes, and just simply poor performance.
Add in another component to this and you have your pre-workout you take before your workout. Have you ever looked closely at the nutrition label on your pre-workout to see how many grams of sugar are in it? You could potentially be consuming more sugar than you thought or at least more simple carbohydrates that you thought. Not only will you get that blood sugar spike but equally problematic, they block your body’s ability to burn fat stores. This is definitely not a desirable effect if you’re trying to lose weight.
A good rule to follow is if you’re exercising less than an hour, or if your workout goal is to burn body fat, you probably don’t need to consume carbs before a workout. Make sure you check your pre-workout too to see what you are putting in your body before a workout.
