Recity, located in Pondicherry, India
Recity was born in 2017 with a dream to solve a multitude of urban issues by bringing citizens and various other stakeholders together to develop livable cities. The name ‘Recity’ captures the essence of the company with one simple idea – when a city malfunctions, you can ‘re-city’ to make it work for its people.

Working with waste is one of the dirtiest jobs there are but Recity thinks it is a pretty honorable one. Workers with Recity are paid fair wages compliant with the law and are often on a payroll for the first time in their lives. The women on staff are also empowered to lead more independent lives.
ecoBali, located in Kuta Utara, Indonesia
ecoBali’s goal from the beginning has always been to see waste as a resource, even plastic, where discarded materials are recovered to be recycled and only the residues are taken to landfills. They have established our own sorting center where post-consumer materials are further separated to maximize recovery and recycling, reaching up to a 90% rate of recycling. They have also started to work with communities to provide the opportunity for communities to be more active in recovering materials and be part of a more circular economy rather than the linear waste collection-disposal systems.
Through CleanHub, they are now utilizing this network to address one of the biggest plastic pollution problems in Indonesia: Multi-Layer pouches. Usually, this plastic would be burned or dumped. ecoBali’s network uses CleanHub’s app to register the collected material for full transparency.
All collection partners are paid based on the collected volumes. This model opens up an entirely new revenue stream for collection businesses and sets the right incentive to collect all types of plastic.
vRecycle, located in Goa, India
At vRecycle, they often change people’s mindset towards their outlook on waste. They have always tried to improve the way they work. Having learned the intricacies of manually sorting waste from waste pickers themselves, they’ve taken the skills of the waste pickers, enhanced the sorting model with a better working environment, aesthetics, signage, color coding to simplify the waste treatment methodology. vRecycle has put a strong emphasis on decentralized waste treatment, avoiding multiple handling of waste, and bringing down the carbon footprint of the recovered recyclables by diverting it to recyclers around them rather than shipping it all to faraway destinations. In addition to this, they can use these efficiency gains to offer their services at a very affordable price, allowing them to work with a wide spectrum of clients. Using technology like GPS tracking and QR codes, they are now offering more transparency to their waste collection, treatment, and disposal model. vRecycle’s waste management model is designed to involve the local community when managing their own waste.
At vRecycle, work is fairly distributed and so, as should always be, women and men are paid equal wages. Staff wanting to make more money are often allowed to take on more responsibilities and learn new skills, thereby helping lead a better life back home while upgrading the level of waste treatment vRecycle now offers.
