Sometimes the popular saying “Just Do It” doesn’t quite cut it. We all can relate to dragging our feet when it comes to needing to get some things done and telling ourselves to just do it. Truthfully, it isn’t that motivating. It is those tasks that you just wish a robot (passing as a human) did it, that just feel like the biggest hurdles of all. (When really they sometimes take a whooping 5 minutes.) But why do they feel so painful? We set out to find ways to make a boring task more exciting. Here are our tips on how to stay focused on boring tasks.
5 Tips to Stay Focused on Boring Tasks
1. Fall in love with the process.
The mundane and boring tasks are always there. It doesn’t really matter what you do in life, there are always the boring tasks in everything. This is also what can separate someone that is good from someone that is great. Those that are great, are the ones that stick to it and do the repetitive “boring” tasks all the time. If you want to become significantly better at anything, you have to fall in love with the process of doing it. You have to fall in love with building the identity of someone who does the work, rather than merely dreaming about the results that you want.
2. Only do a little bit.
When you are tackling those boring tasks, only work on it for just 15 minutes at a time. Set a timer and when it rings, stop and rest or move on to something else. This technique works like a charm. It eliminates procrastination because you can do anything for just 15 minutes. It creates focus. And you can’t get as bored because you aren’t allowed to spend that much time on it. So for 15 minutes, maybe you focus on cleaning the kitchen counters instead of thinking about needing to clean the whole kitchen.
3. Take pride in the mundane.
“Anything you have to do is worth doing well.” Many famous people have said this time and time again. (They have a good point.) Perfectionism can certainly be debilitating, but there’s something motivating in wanting to do something well. It’s very satisfying to complete a project when you do it well. Folding and stacking all of your towels and sheets in the linen closet can look so pretty when done right. Every time you open the linen closet, you get a sense of joy out of how nice it looks, plus pride in the fact that you did that. It is a constant reminder of a job well done.
4. Combine boring tasks with something you enjoy.
How many times over the years have you listened to music while mowing the lawn or going for a run? Pairing together something you enjoy with someone you don’t can make the task you don’t enjoy better. You do it while mowing the lawn, so try it with those boring mind-numbing tasks.
