We got the chance to chat with Keegan and see how she has adapted her workouts and has kept motivated in 2020.
E: How are you staying fit without being able to go to the gym?
KL: Staying fit without the gym has been pretty tough and has taken some creativity, but I’ve found a good routine with the few pieces of equipment that we have in our apartment and a few great apps that I use for classes. With just a few 10 lb. dumbbells, resistance bands, and a TRX, I can still get some amazing work in! I’ve changed the focus from increasing power and weights to increasing reps and slowing the pace down to maximize the difficulty and reach muscle fatigue.
E: What is your go-to workout people can do at home?
KL: A bodyweight HIIT series is always an effective workout. Incorporating EMRAP sets is a great way to push yourself beyond your usual 12 – 15 reps that you might be doing. I like to change up moves in these workouts too, for instance instead of just doing squat jumps, add a reverse lunge between each. Doing moves like this, forces control and therefore uses more muscles in your body instead of just repping out as many of one move after another as you can.
E: What is your favorite ‘easy button’ meal to make at home?
KL: I love a good grain bowl. There are so many quick-cook packets out there full of great grain mixes that you can heat up quickly, add some beans, lean protein, sauteed vegetables and you’re done! It also keeps in the fridge really well so you could heat it up the next day or throw it in a sweet potato wrap!
E: When ordering Door Dash/Uber Eats, how do you make sure you order a healthy meal?
KL: Eating out is always tricky while trying to stay healthy, but I always try and get things that involve minimal cooking. Restaurants often add tons of oils and butter to dishes so the simpler the dish, the less they have to do to it.
E: What is keeping you motivated right now?
KL: My constant motivation (even pre-pandemic) is how I feel. I know I feel loads better when I eat healthy and keep my body moving. I’ve stopped worrying about the extra pounds or the fact that I can’t get in heavy reps anymore because there is nothing that we can do about it for now, so focusing on feeling good and doing what I can has kept me going. The alternative, while easy and feels good in that moment is what gets me feeling gross later in the day or the next morning. I try and always keep that feeling in the back of my mind and know that it is completely within my control to avoid it, the methods might just look different.
E: What is your favorite healthy snack?
KL: You can’t beat an apple and peanut butter (natural PB of course), especially this time of year when there are delicious Honeycrisps all over the grocery stores.
E: What is your favorite EBOOST product right now and why?
KL: The Workout Crusher has been my bestie for years! I know that there are days that I wouldn’t have had it in me to get my workout in without the Pre-Workout mix.
E: What does your morning routine look like (if you have one)?
KL: I am an early riser. I absolutely love mornings, so I wake up around 5:45 to get some extra time to drink my coffee, watch the news, a little ESPN and plan my day. After that, I feel energized to get to work for a few hours before my mid-day workout!
E: If there is one piece of equipment someone could get the most results from while working out at home (or the local park), what would it be?
KL: One set of dumbells could be all that you need to get a great workout in, and there are some amazing interchangeable sets out there that provide you more than one weight, BUT a set of resistance bands is super versatile and extremely travel-friendly. It is a great way to access different muscles during even the simplest of moves that, without the bands, would not be as active.
E: What is your motto right now?
KL: Everything is figureoutable, which is an amazing book, by the way! It can be so easy to be paralyzed with fear or irritation about the state of everything but I try to use that motto to move forward in the smartest and best way that I can. I also say this to myself with perspective, because I know that while there may be things that come up that are inconvenient for me, but I know that there are people going through things much more difficult and hard and that my little inconvenience is figureoutable.
